Upscale fluorescent fixtures yield high performance with a low energy cost: Lightolier launches HP90 direct/indirect luminaires

Wilmington, MA – Lightolier, the leader in interior lighting for over a century, has introduced HP90 (high performance), an upgraded line of direct/indirect recessed fluorescent luminaires suitable for offices and other interiors. HP90 creates softly balanced, visually comfortable illumination that, depending on the application, is up to 60 percent more efficient than the minimum LEED credit requirement . HP90 utilizes two 28-watt lamps and features a ballast that is accessible on the room side of the fixture, unlike competing models. HP90 fixtures are available in three sizes at only 5" deep. The luminaires fit flush to slot grid or standard grid ceiling systems, providing a clean appearance.

For years parabolic troffers have been mainstays in office lighting. Their sharp cut-off louvers cast shadows on the wall near the ceiling line. "This results in a dim, cave-like feel in the room and can cause eyestrain and fatigue in employees ," said William Fabbri, Vice President and General Manager of Lightolier's Fluorescent Division . Other volumetric lighting products utilize multiple lenses that do not illuminate all surfaces of the visible fixture evenly. This creates bright and dark areas that detract from the fixture's appearance on the ceiling.

In contrast, HP90's broad light distribution eliminates dark bands and provides all surfaces, vertical and horizontal, with balanced brightness that enhances the ability to see and work effectively in the space. Luminance is even and consistent with only 1.5 to 1 light variation in the room, compared to 1.8 to 1 and up that is common in the marketplace. W ithin a particular room size, it is possible to achieve up to 56 maintained footcandles of light at only .68 watts per square foot, significantly exceeding minimum LEED requirements . "Workers' eyes don't have to adjust to the different light levels as frequently," said Fabbri. "It's much more comfortable. Additionally, the design is very efficient - you get LEED-worthy energy savings without compromising on light levels."
